Tasmania
Holidays - Places To Stay
Tasmania offers traditional hotels,
motels and motor inns that range from luxury to budget along with a selection of smaller boutique
hotels. Serviced apartments cater to
visitors who prefer the independence of self catering and a home away from
home experience.
Tasmania has a deserved
reputation for its excellent "personal touch" accommodation such as bed &
breakfasts, seaside beach retreats, country lodges,
homely farm stays and historic guesthouses.
The accommodation in
Hobart and
the other major towns consists mostly of traditional hotels
and serviced apartments. Motels and motor inns are more prevalent in the
rural areas.

Holidays - Transport
Most visitors to Tasmania
will arrive at one of the city airports. Regular air services operate between the mainland
cities to
Hobart and Launceston. Local flights
between towns are available but tourists will best appreciate this island state from ground
level.
If a self drive holiday is
planned, it's possible to take your own vehicle on the
Spirit of Tasmania passenger and car ferry
that operates between Devonport and
the mainland city of Melbourne. Cars can also be freighted separately from the mainland.
Tasmania has an excellent network of sealed roads
with the exception of the rugged south west. This is a region of
adventure expeditions and river tours which involve specialised transport
with access arranged by tour providers. Several bus transport companies operate throughout
the state. There are numerous tour operators offering a broad selection of
tours and activities. All the national Australian car hire companies are represented.
Motor homes and campervans,
both 2WD and 4WD are available for rental, but only from Hobart.
The offices of the Royal Auto Club of Tasmania (RACT), which has offices in all
major towns, can provide driver information and touring maps.

Holidays - When Is The Best Time
Tasmania is the coldest of
the Australian states and experiences a climate with four distinct seasons.
Winter temperatures in the mountains and alpine regions can drop to below
0°C while the minimum temperatures closer to sea level will
generally be around 2-4°C.
Maximum summer temperatures
at elevation will usually be around the 14-16°C
mark whereas at sea level the maximums are usually around 20-22°C.
Tasmania is an all year-round
destination. The best time of year
for you will depend on what you plan to do and where you plan to visit. It
is unlikely that extreme weather will play a part in your holiday plans. Bear in
mind that the mountain country does get winter snow so activities in those areas
need to take that into account.
