NSW Central Coast Holidays


The Central Coast of New South Wales is a region that symbolizes the best of coast, city and country living. The region stretches from Bulahdelah and the Myall lakes in the north to Sydney in the south and west across to the Hunter Valley, Muswellbrook and Scone.

The region offers a variety of sightseeing delights including Aboriginal rock paintings and engravings, bush scenery, mountains, lakes, rivers and historic sites.

The vineyards and wine tasting of the Hunter Valley are a popular choice and the gourmet food provides a culinary delight. Plenty of outdoor activities are also available including horse riding, hot-air ballooning, golf, eco tours, bushwalking and cellar door tours.

 

Central Coast Holidays - Places of Interest

Nelson Bay - a popular spot with good beaches and plenty of golf courses. The town is well known for its dolphin population, fishing and boating. It is the centre for cruise operators and is located on the coast at Port Stephens.

Hunter Valley - renowned for its fine wines with major wineries located around the Cessnock area in the Lower Hunter area. Other wineries can be found around Muswellbrook in the upper Hunter area. Wine tasting is available at most vineyards and the popular Hunter Wine and Food Festival is held annually in September.

Places of interest include the historic Wollombi village with its regional history and aboriginal cave art sites located in the Gouldburn River National Park at the upper end of the valley. The region and surrounding areas can be seen in this Central Coast highlights locality map.

Maitland & Morpeth - these historic villages with their examples of Georgian style homes and public buildings, illustrate what village life was like in New South Wales in one of Australia's original settlements.

Singleton - marks the boundary between the upper and lower Hunter areas. This town is one of the oldest in New South Wales and services the nearby coal mines.

Scone - located at the top end of the Hunter Valley and known as the horse capital of Australia. There are about 50 race horse studs in the area and visits are available to some of the studs. Horse Week is held in May each year.

Newcastle - the second largest city in New South Wales and home to one of Australia's largest ports. Located at the mouth of the Hunter River the city displays examples of early colonial architecture and a breakwater built by the convicts.

The Newcastle Regional Gallery and the Regional Maritime and Military Museum at Fort Scratchley both display a fine collection of contemporary Australian art. Lake Macquarie, the largest salt water lake in Australia, is located nearby and very popular with enthusiasts of sailing, waterskiing and fishing.

Newcastle is generally considered as an industrial city, yet just a few minutes from the city centre are popular surf beaches, the equal of many of the more popular holiday destinations.

Gosford - a principal town servicing the attractions of the Central Coast area. Gosford is easily reached by road and rail. Aboriginal engravings, spring wildflowers, the beach resort centre of Terrial and the township of Pearl Beach. For bushwalkers there is the Brisbane Water National Park and the bushland of the Yarramalong Valley.
