NSW Southern Highlands

The Southern Highlands of New South Wales is an elevated  tableland south of Sydney that extends through to the high country of the Kosciusko National Park and on to the border with Victoria.

This is a region of lush countryside, historic sites, quaint villages and small towns, magnificent gardens, waterfalls, lakes, native forests, bushwalks, antiques and arts and crafts.

The high country of the Snowy Mountains is Australia's winter playground with a sophisticated skiing industry. Angling, bushwalking, wildflowers and the wide outdoors during the other seasons. It's a great region to explore at your own pace in a campervan or motorhome rental vehicle.

Southern Highlands - Places of Interest

Mittagong and Bowral - These two separate towns are in very close proximity to each other. Bowral is the home town of the famous cricket player, Sir Don Bradman, and now has the Bradman Museum, a must see for any serious cricket follower.

To the west lies the Wombeyan Caves with adventure caving. Enjoy the scenic route over Mount Gibraltar that lies between the towns. The Corbett Gardens in Bowral in spring is spectacular.

Berrima - this tiny town contains many pioneering artifacts and colonial buildings which remain little changed from early pioneering days. Take a ride in a Cobb & Co coach and visit the  Berrima Historical Museum. Guided walks are available at Joadja Ghost Town.

Morton National Park - access to the park is via Bundanoon and Fitzroy Falls. This is a wilderness area with magnificent sandstone cliffs and the Fitzroy and Belmore Falls. Pay a visit to the Fitzroy Falls Heritage Centre before you head on to the beautifulKangaroo Valley.

Goulburn - you can't enter town without seeing the Big Merino. This is a prosperous rural town that services the surrounding sheep and grazing districts and renowned for the fine Merino wool produced in the area. The town has an impressive courthouse and visits are available to The Old Goulburn Brewery.

Queanbeyan - while the town is situated on the NSW side of the border with Canberra, it is now really an extension of Canberra rather than a separate town.

Tumut - this is the home of Australia's largest commercial trout farm. There are visits available to the key centres of the Snowy Hydroelectric scheme. Visit the nearby Yarrangobilly Caves and thermal pool and sample the produce of the apple farms at Batlow.

Cooma - the town was originally built as the construction centre for the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectic Scheme. The many nationalities involved in that massive project are commemorated in The Avenue of Flags. There are several historic buildings in the town including the courthouse and gaol.

Jindabyne and Thredbo - these two names are associated with Australia's winter ski resorts. Jindabyne has a lake for summer swimming and boating. While Thredbo is one of the better known ski centres, there are other popular slopes at Perisher Blue, Charlotte Pass and Mt Selwyn. The Alpine Way is a popular scenic drive through the area.
