The New South Wales region of New England stretches from the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, south to the country music centre of Tamworth and west to cotton fields of Narrabri. This is a region of undulating tablelands, lush pastures, forests and national parks. The New England tablelands has some of Australia's best wool growing areas. The university town of Armidale boosts the regions population during semesters. The University Of New England is the oldest regional university in Australia. Visitors can participate in farm stays, 4WD treks, trout fishing, gem fossicking, spa baths, bushwalking and country music festivals.

Glen Innes - originally established by Scottish settlers. Some original buildings still remain in the main street. The Standing Stones above the town are a well jnown landmark. The town hosts the Australian Music Festival in October. Visit the Gibraltar Range National Park east of Glen Innes. There are plenty of fossicking opportunities with trout fishing in the mountain streams in season. Inverell - a town with a history based on tin mining and blue sapphires. The area provides plenty of fossicking opportunities. There is a Pioneer Village and Gwydir Ranch Park (4WD) offers fishing and canoeing. Make time for a visit to the Dejon Sapphire centre, which is an operating plant. Keen anglers should try their luck at Lake Copeton. Armidale - known for its gorges and waterfalls and situated at an elevation of over 1000 metres. This is a university town with a large student population. The World Heritage listed New England National Park is a must see for visitors. The Oxley Wild Rivers National Park south of the town is also worth a visit. Art lovers should make time for the New England Regional Art Museum and Armidale Folk Museum. Cathedral Rock National Park lies to the east of town as does the restored mining village at Hillgrove. Saumarez Homestead provides a fine example of the architecture of the period when the area was first settled. Cliff top abseiling, trout fishing in mountain streams, gold fossicking, canoeing on Dumaresq Dam are all popular activities. Tamworth - known as the country music capital of Australia, plays host to the 11 day Tamworth country music festival each January. There are several horse events held during the year. There is plenty of opportunity for farm stays. Visitor activities include horse riding, sailing and fossicking at Nundle and other sites. Fishing is popular at Manilla and Lake Keepit and trout can be taken in the the MacDonald River and Dungowan Creek. Moree - the town is best best known for its warm, artesian spa baths. Aboriginal art is on display at the Moree Plains Gallery and the Yurundiali Aboriginal Corporation. Trawalla Pecan nut farm is the largest in the southern hemisphere. There are cotton farm and gin tours in season. Narrabri - home of the huge Australia Telescope sited west of town which services the surrounding cotton farming communities. |
