The Riverina region of New South Wales comprises the southern and south western region of the state as it heads west along the Murray River which forms the border with Victoria. The region supported Aboriginal communities for over 40,000 years. Unlike most of Australia, the Riverina has a combination of flat, fertile plains and an ample supply of water. It is one of the most productive and prosperous rural regions in Australia. The first European settlers in the area used the land for beef and wool production. This is an area of prosperous farming communities, large irrigation projects, paddlewheel steamers chugging past stately river gums, fertile pastures, thick forests, historic villages, vineyards, wineries and orchards.
