NSW Sydney Surrounds Tours And Holidays

This page covers the areas beyond a 25-30km radius from the Sydney city centre. The central Sydney city area has its own page on this site. The areas surrounding Sydney are associated with some of Australia's earliest history and some wonderful natural attractions.

To the north of Sydney lies the lovely waterways of Pittwater and Broken Bay where the Hawkesbury River reaches the ocean. The Hawkesbury is a favoured spot for water sports.

To the west of the city lie some of the small towns dating from the days of earliest Australian settlement. South west of the city is a corridor of small towns and the roads that traverse the available coastal belt between the Great Dividing Range and the ocean.

The coastline south from Sydney Heads features excellent National Parks, noted for the rugged coastal cliffs dropping to the ocean below.

Places To Visit Around Sydney

Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park - a popular, near city national park located north of the city.  The 15,000 hectares are situated on the southern shores of Broken Bay, where the Hawkesbury River reaches the ocean in a maze of cliffs and small coves. The park has walking tracks, picnic spots, horse riding trails, Aboriginal rock engravings and views of Broken Bay from West Head.

Hawkesbury River - a favourite spot for water sports, located north of Sydney and home of several bridge-to-bridge races involving power boats, skiiing and canoes.  The river is flanked by national parks with very little in the way of settlement and habitation.

Visitors to the Hawkesbury River region can try something a little different and join the riverboat postman to deliver mail and supplies to isolated communities along the river. The 3 hour trip departs week days from the ferry wharf at Brooklyn.

The Great North Walk is a 250 km walking track linking Sydney and Newcastle, perfect for the fit and adventurous who like their tours at ground level. The Hawkesbury area provides attractive countryside, several access points and connections to local transport.

Windsor - one of the oldest towns in Australia and located 55 km to the north-wast of Sydney. The town is a popular destination for lovers of history and early Australian architecture, having been established by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in the early 1800's in the upper Hawkesbury Valley. Colonial buildings still exist in the adjoining town of Richmond.

Camden - located to the south west of Sydney and known as the birthplace of the nation's wealth when wool was the main source of income. John Macarthur started sheep breeding trials here that led to the development of the Merino and the foundations of Australia's wool industry.

Royal National Park - this is the rugged coastline south of Sydney Heads featuring vertical coastal cliffs and which was the first proclaimed National Park in Australia. The park has several  popular beaches and excellent walks, with boat hire at Audley and rowing on the Hacking River.
