Interest
Tweed Heads - the twin towns of Tweed Heads and
Coolangatta are one and the same location with a state border placing them
in different states. Tweed Heads has all the same holiday attractions as the
better known Gold Coast over the border in Queensland.
Local
attractions include the
Twin Towns Services Club and Casino, Tropical Fruitworld for exotic fruits, the Pioneer Plantation for a ride to the top
of Banana Mountain, Melaleuca Station and Tea-tree plantation with its
historic train ride and the
Minjungbal
Aboriginal Cultural Centre. For
sports enthusiasts there is fishing in the Tweed estuary and Cobaki Lakes,
offshore deep sea fishing and scuba diving, river cruises and lots more.
Kingscliff - located a few kms south of Tweed
Heads, Kingscliff has become a holiday destination in its own right. Popular
for its patrolled beach at South
Kingscliff in the summer, an estuary for
safe swimming and fishing, good boat ramps, offshore reefs and numerous
beachfront cafés and restaurants.
Cudgen
- a flora and fauna sanctuary can be found at Cudgen Nature Reserve. The
lake and upper part of the creek lie within its boundaries. Attractions
include bushwalking, bird watching, barbecue facilities, canoeing and
swimming.
Pottsville - located on the coast with excellent
beaches, the town is now a popular holiday destination. Visit the
Bicentennial Leisure Garden. The town hosts craft markets twice a month.
Many sporting activities on offer.
Murwillumbah - a picturesque town stretching from
the Tweed River up into the hills of the McPherson ranges and home of the
last remnant of the second biggest extinct volcano in the world. There are
five World Heritage National Parks in the area including Mt Warning and
Border Ranges National Parks. The annual Tweed Banana Festival is held here
in August/September and the town still services the banana, sugarcane and
dairying farms of the Tweed Valley.
Byron Bay - renowned for its surfing beaches,
sheltered coves, restaurants, cafes, art galleries and its alternative
lifestyle community. Local attractions at
Byron Bay include dolphin and whale spotting
(during June/July and September/November), the
Cape Byron Lighthouse, golf and numerous holiday
activities throughout the year.
Ballina
- some of the best surfing on the north coast is at
Lennox Heads just north
of Ballina. Centred on an island in the mouth of the Richmond River, Ballina
is a very popular holiday destination offering sheltered beaches. as well as
all types of watersports. Take a river cruise and enjoy the surrounding
countryside or visit the Naval & Martime Museum to view the Las Balsas
Expedition raft that sailed from South America in 1973.
Lismore
- servicing the surrounding farming communities, Lismore is a major regional
centre of the Northern Rivers District. Cruise the Richmond and Wilson
Rivers on the MV Bennelong, visit the Rotary Rainforest Reserve featuring 6
hectares of rainforest and boardwalk, visit Macadamia Magic for an
introduction to Australia's favourite nut. Other attractions include the
lovely Protestor Falls in the Nightcap National Park and Rocky Creek Dam.
Grafton - a graceful town located on the Clarence
River at the intersection of the Pacific Highway and the Gwydir Highway.
Grafton
lies at the centre of the local sugarcane farming area. The town is well
known for its jacaranda tree lined streets, elegant boulevards, grand
Victorian homes and riverbank parks.
Many of the homes are listed by the
National Trust. Visit the turn-of-the-century river port of Ulmarra Village,
the
Jacaranda
Festival held annually in October/November or enjoy the
canoeing and rafting on several white-water rivers in the area.
