This is an area of the Northern Territory that extends from the boundaries of Kakadu and Arnhem Land south to the start of the Barkly Tableland. With the exception of the Katherine area, there are no significant tourist attractions in this region. This is a cattle raising area and in days long gone, some cattle properties were larger than some European countries.

Local tours include the Cutta Cutta Caves with their bat colonies, the Katherine Gorge (see below) and a visit to Springvale Homestead for an Aboriginal corroboree. Katherine Gorge is actually a series of 13 gorges along the Katherine River with sheer sandstone cliffs. The gorge is situated in the Nitmiluk National Park. Boat cruises are available along the river. Manyallaluk is 100 km further south along the highway from Katherine. There is an opportunity to spend a day learning about bush medicine with Aboriginal people and participating in their lifestyle activities.
