Northern Territory Tableland

This huge expanse of the Northern Territory takes in the Tanami Desert in the west and sweeps across to the large cattle stations of the Barkley Tableland in the east. This is real Australian outback country, very sparsely populated and where everything is a long way from everything else.

There are no tourist attractions of any note, although the Tennant Creek area does offer some attractions to visitors passing on the  Highway.

Northern Territory Tableland - Places of Interest

Tennant Creek is a mining town and the the site of Australia's last gold rush in the 1930's. Tours are available of the underground mines and goldfields. Try you luck at fossicking or jump on a horse and do some cattle mustering.

Battery Hill is worth a visit for information on the gold mine days and visit the local Aboriginal art gallery and cultural centre.

Tennant Creek region is where visitors can reach Davenport Range National Park, a relatively new park that is rich in Aboriginal dreamtime lore. The park entry is 87 km south of Tennant Creek and a 4WD is strongly recommended. Get park information information and maps beforehand.

100km south of Tennant Creek is the Devils Marbles which are a unique formation of huge precariously balanced boulders known as "Karlu-Karlu" by the Aboriginals. In Aboriginal folklore the rocks are the eggs of the Dreamtime Rainbow Serpent.
