Territory Top End - Places of
Interest
Darwin
is the capital city of the Northern Territory, The
town was flattened by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day 1974 and was
subsequently rebuilt to far more stringent building standards. Darwin is the
major starting point for all Northern Territory tours and travel.
Visit the Esplanade and
feed the fish at high tide at Aquascene or take in the tropical sunsets from
East Point. Experience aboriginal culture firsthand at nearby Bathurst and
Melville Islands.
For an
insight into the pearling industry, pay a visit to the
Indo
Pacific Marine Exhibition. Aviation buffs will find some surprisingly
rare exhibits in the Darwin Aviation Museum. Some of Australia's finest
Aboriginal art is exhibited at the Museum and Art Gallery. For a change of
pace, acquaint yourself with the exploits of "Sweetheart".
Stop off at
Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve on the road to Kakadu for its bird
populations. Have have a refreshing, and safe, swim at the Leaning Tree
Lagoon Nature Park.
Litchfield National Park is
relatively close to Darwin and is now given the exposure it deserves. It is
a place of spring fed plunge pools, waterfalls, walking trails and
fascinating magnetic termite mounds.
Pay a visit to the Florence and Wangi Falls.
Kakadu National Park
is one of Australia's premier National Park, covering 20 000 sq km of
unspoiled wetlands and listed as a World heritagesite. Most areas of the
park are accessible via sealed roads but 4WD is necessary to reach some
attractions. The park landscape varies depending on Wet or Dry season times
of the year.
There are
walking trails and guided walks with park rangers. A popular spot is sunrise
at Yellow Waters with crocodiles in their natural element. Visit the
impressive
Jim Jim
Falls and the plunge pool at Maguk. For information about the area and
the Aboriginal culture, visit the Bowali Visitor Centre and the Warradjan
Cultural Center. Examples of Aboriginal rock art can be seen at Ubirr and
Nourlangie Rock.
Arnhem Land is
proclaimed Aboriginal territory and the most remote travel region in the
Northern Territory. Aboriginal culture and history is evident all over the
94 000 sq km covered by this area. Visitors can learn about bush foods, fish
for
barramundi, cruise the billabongs and see traditional Aboriginal art at
Mt Borradaile.
