Queensland Brisbane Tours And Holidays

Brisbane is Australia's sunshine capital, renowned for its aid-back lifestyle and excellent climate. It's the capital city of Queensland and the point of entry for most visitors starting their Queensland vacation.

Starting as a humble penal settlement in 1824, Brisbane has blossomed into a rapidly growing, cosmopolitan city with a population approaching 2 million people.

The city's dominant feature is the Brisbane River, straddled by a compact CBD and a huge suburban area on both the north and south sides of the river. Recent river management projects have resulted in the Brisbane River steadily returning to its natural state.

This has led to the development of river-side parks, walks and bikeways and recreational access to the river is now very much a part of the Brisbane scene.

Visitors will find an excellent selection of Brisbane hotels and apartments and other lodgings such as motels and motor-inns. The hotel comparison tool (opposite) will guarantee the best price and find the best location for your accommodation.

Tour the city by tram, local tour bus or city council sight-seeing buses. Abseil the river side rock faces, climb the Storey Bridge or take a paddlewheel cruise on the Brisbane River.

Catch the ferry to Moreton Island and feed wild dolphins at Tangalooma Island. Try another ferry trip to North Stradbroke Island for day trips and bush-walking. Drive north to Bribie Island for a spot of surfing or fishing in the Pumicestone Passage. Stop off for a visit to Australia Zoo.

For hikers and bushwalkers, head inland for the trails, bushwalks, picnic areas and lookouts at Camp Mountain, Mt. Nebo, Manorina National Park, Mt. Glorious and Lomandra.

Take a walking tour of the city following the "Heritage Trail". St. John's Cathedral, started in 1901 and still not completed. The corinthian columns and copper dome of Customs House. St. Stephen's Church, the city's oldest church with its adjoining, modern cathedral. The Old Windmill (Observatory) dating from the original convict settlement and The Old Commissariat Store of the same era.

Appreciate the Victorian elegance of The Mansions in William Street. Their distinctive Victorian sandstone of Parliament House and Old Government House.

The Queensland Cultural Centre flanks the south bank of the Brisbane and combines a world class performing arts complex, quality museum and art gallery. The adjoining Southbank Parklands offers open air entertainment and eateries. Chance your luck at the nearby Treasure Casino on the opposite bank of the river.

Mt. Cootha is a must on any Brisbane holiday, boasting a magnificent botanic gardens of 57 hectares containing subtropical and Australian flora in a setting of lakes, ponds and streams. Mt. Coota has a planetarium and an impressive lookout across the entire city, especially at dusk and early evening as the city lights up.

The beautifully preserved Newstead House is a historic homestead open for inspection to the public. Set beside the river, this property reflects the lifestyle of the Brisbane well-to-do in the mid 1800's.

History buffs should take in a visit to St. Helena Island to see the ruins of one of Queensland's major penal colony prisons. Originally built as a quarantine station in 1866, it was almost immediately converted to a prison, became a prison farm in 1921 and was abandoned in 1933.

Aviation buffs will appreciate the Kingsford Smith Memorial which is located adjacent the Brisbane airport and has on display the "Southern Cross", the Fokker aircraft in which Sir Charles Kingsford Smith flew the first crossing of the Pacific Ocean.
