The Queensland Cultural Centre flanks the south bank of
the Brisbane and combines a world
class performing arts complex, quality museum and art gallery. The adjoining
Southbank
Parklands offers open air entertainment and eateries. Chance your luck at the nearby
Treasure Casino on the opposite bank of the river.
Mt. Cootha is a
must on any Brisbane holiday, boasting a
magnificent botanic gardens of 57 hectares containing subtropical and
Australian flora in a setting of lakes, ponds and streams. Mt. Coota has a
planetarium and an impressive lookout across the entire city, especially
at dusk and early evening as the city lights up.
The
beautifully preserved
Newstead House is a historic homestead open for inspection to the public. Set beside the river,
this property reflects the lifestyle of the Brisbane well-to-do in the
mid 1800's.
History buffs should take in a visit to
St. Helena Island
to see the ruins of
one of Queensland's major penal colony prisons. Originally built as a quarantine station in 1866,
it was
almost immediately converted to a prison, became a prison farm in 1921 and was abandoned
in 1933.
Aviation buffs will appreciate the Kingsford Smith Memorial
which is located
adjacent the Brisbane airport and has on display the "Southern Cross", the Fokker
aircraft in which Sir Charles Kingsford Smith flew the first crossing of the Pacific
Ocean.
