Spend a little time in the outback and you begin to understand just how big Australia really is! The Queensland outback stretches almost 3000 km from the New South Wales border in the south up into the Gulf Country in the north and west to the Northern Territory border. The Outback never ceases to surprise the visitor. It's parched in the dry, yet can disappear under water in the wet season. Tree lined lagoons and winter wildflowers offset the harsh extremes of summer. A holiday in the Queensland outback will almost certainly include old bush pubs, country hospitality and a "don't rush" lifestyle. This is the Australia of vivid sunsets and sunrises, Aboriginal rock art, dinosaur fossils in one place, opals and sapphires in another. The major roads throughout the outback are bitumen sealed and safe for all classes of vehicles. However once you leave the major highways, roads are unsealed and 4WD vehicles are the order of the day. If you are planning a self drive adventure in a hired campervan or motorhome through the Queensland outback, no matter what type of vehicle you are driving, it's essential to carry a full range of emergency equipment and spares in good working order. Seek advice on road conditions from the nearest RACQ office. |
