South
East Queensland - At A Glance
The coastal area of south east Queensland includes the World Heritage listed
Fraser Island, the whale migration path through
Hervey Bay
, North Stradbroke Island and the famed golden beaches of the
Sunshine Coast and
Gold Coast.
Inland from the coast are the elevated hinterland areas with cool breezes, beautiful rolling landscapes and pockets of remaining,
ancient rainforests. Hinterland attractions include historic homesteads and
several national parks.
The Darling Downs is one of Queensland's major agricultural areas, growing
much of the fresh fruit and vegetables that makes its way to the consumers'
table. The western parts of the Darling Downs is mostly rolling plains that
support grain farming, wool production and a flourishing beef industry.
South
East Queensland - The Places
Maryborough is located on the Mary River and
noted for its imposing Victorian buildings. The town is at the centre
of the surrounding sugar industry. Pay a visit to the National Trust listed
building of Brennnan and
McGeraghty, a store preserved exactly as it was 100 years ago.
Hervey Bay
is
the whale watching centre of
Australia during migration season between July to mid-Oct. It is
the jumping off point for Fraser Island.
Fraser Island is World heritage listed, unique and spectacular sand island with rainforests and clear lakes.
Access is restricted to 4WD vehicles and trail bike
access only. Permits are needed prior to arrival. This is a highly recommended
destination for the environmentally inclined.
Gympie was a gold mining town until 1920,
but is now better known for its Country
music festival in August. Visit the Cooloola National Park for access to Rainbow Beach, Inskip
Point and the wreck of the "Cherry Venture".

Ipswich was once a prosperous mining town that is now becoming
an extension
of Brisbane's urban spread to the west. The town has several historic homes and public buildings
and is making a
transition to a technology centre.
Toowoomba is the major centre of the Darling Downs,
noted for its spectacular gardens in early spring. Visit the Cobb and Co. museum for historic carriages
and the early history of the region. For more local history, visit the Jondaryan
Woolshed tourist complex west of town.
Warwick is the second oldest town in Queensland after
Brisbane. This is a prosperous little darling Downs country town with some fine examples of sandstone buildings.
Stanthorpe is always several
degrees colder than anywhere else, being Queensland's coldest
town and situated on the elevated
Granite
Belt. It is a farming centre noted for its
fruit, vegetables and vineyards. Visit the Girraween National Park.
Other Inland Towns are Goondiwindi, Dalby and
Chinchilla which are all typical country towns that service their surrounding rural communities.
