This is a region centred on Brisbane, the state capital. Overall, the region stretches from Maryborough in the north to the New South Wales border in the south, and west across the rich, agricultural black soil plains of the Darling Downs. The Queensland south east is one of the most popular holiday regions in the world. It includes Australia's renowned Gold Coast as well as the Sunshine Coast, both being premier beach destinations that have lured generations of holiday makers. These are the holiday mecca areas of Australia and provide famous surf beaches, holiday attractions and entertainment for all ages in several theme parks. The sand beaches of "Straddie" and the whale watching centre of Hervey Bay are to be found in this region. The coastal area of south east Queensland includes the World Heritage listed Fraser Island, the whale migration path through Hervey Bay , North Stradbroke Island and the famed golden beaches of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. |

Inland from the coast are the elevated hinterland areas with cool breezes, beautiful rolling landscapes and pockets of remaining, ancient rainforests. Hinterland attractions include historic homesteads and several national parks. The Darling Downs is one of Queensland's major agricultural areas, growing much of the fresh fruit and vegetables that makes its way to the consumers' table. The western parts of the Darling Downs is mostly rolling plains that support grain farming, wool production and a flourishing beef industry.
