Eyre Peninsula Holidays

This is a narrow coastal region that runs along the Great Australian Bight, stretching from the Spencer Gulf in the east to the border with Western Australia in the west. It's an agricultural region with iron ore production on the Eyre Peninsula. Popular holiday retreats dot the Spencer Gulf coastline.

There are surf beaches, marine breeding grounds and rugged coastal formations on the west coast of the peninsula. As you travel further west the landscape changes to flat semi-desert where the few inhabitants generally reside at the occasional road stops dotted along the highway.

The Wadlata Outback Centre houses the history of Aboriginal and early European settlement of the region. The town is one of Australia's major crossroad cities with road and rail branching out in all directions.

Whyalla to Port Lincoln is the route along the eastern coast of the Eyre Peninsula. It passes through the oyster farming town of Cowell, once a jade mining centre. At nearby Point Gibbon there are large sand dunes and a very attractive coastline.

The route continues south through the peaceful seaside townships of Arno Bay and Port Niell before reaching the white beaches and National Trust Museum at Tumby Bay. The Sir Joseph Banks Islands are home to marine birdlife and colonies of sea lions.

Port Lincoln is best known as the tuna capital of Australia and is situated at the bottom of the Eyre Peninsula. Port Lincoln has several historic buildings and some excellent lookouts over the surrounding coastline. The small resort and fishing township of Elliston has salmon fishing at Lock Wells and spectacular coastal scenery at Salmon Point and Anxious Bay. Another coastal township offering good fishing is Streaky Bay.

Ceduna is the eastern end of the Eyre Highway. This is the road that crosses the famous Nullabour Plain on its way to Western Australia. Whale watching is popular from the shore at nearby Head of Bight during the June-October breeding season.
