This is a huge region of central Australia that lies north of the Flinders Ranges and the trans continental railway, and extends north to the border of the Northern Territory. Much of the region is classified as desert even though maps show the area to be criss-crossed by a network of creeks, rivers and lakes. These exist in name only as they are all dry and only carry water at very infrequent intervals. The Stuart Highway is the major route through the region on its way to is to Alice Springs and Darwin. If you plan to travel off the highway, make sure you are in a 4WD vehicle and travel prepared for unsealed roads. Outback roads like the Birdsville Track into western Queensland and the loop through Maree and Oodnadatta into the Northern Territory are effected by the seasons. Check with local authorities before attempting these routes as rainfall can close the roads. |
