South Australia Far North Tours And Holidays

This is a huge region of central Australia that lies north of the Flinders Ranges and the trans continental railway, and extends north to the border of the Northern Territory.

Much of the region is classified as desert even though maps show the area to be criss-crossed by a network of creeks, rivers and lakes. These exist in name only as they are all dry and only carry water at very infrequent intervals.

The Stuart Highway is the major route through the region on its way to is to Alice Springs and Darwin. If you plan to travel off the highway, make sure you are in a 4WD vehicle and travel prepared for unsealed roads.

Outback roads like the Birdsville Track into western Queensland and the loop through Maree and Oodnadatta into the Northern Territory are effected by the seasons. Check with local authorities before attempting these routes as rainfall can close the roads.

Places To Go & Things To See In The Far North

Woomera was the launch centre during the 1950's for British rocket testing. Quarantine has now been lifted and tours are available to the Woomera rocket range and the town heritage centre with relics of the testing era.

Coober Pedy is that opal mining town where people live underground to escape the extremes of climate. While summer days in Coober Pedy can pass 50°C, winter nights can drop to freezing. Fossicking is permitted and there are tours of the workings and opal cutting centres.

Oodnadatta is a township that suffered a reversal of fortune when the railway was relocated. Oodnadatta was a staging post for the construction of the old overland telegraph and was also the railhead for the old rail line to Adelaide.

Andmooka is an opal mining town north of Woomera, but its nearby neighbour Olympic Dam is much better known because of the anti-uranium protests and controversy that took place during the mine's development.

Maree is almost a ghost town that sits at the southern end of the Birdsville track. This old staging post for the Afghan camel trains was also a railhead for cattle moved south along the Birdsville Track from western Queensland.
