Flinders Ranges Holidays

The Flinders Ranges are one of the few elevated land masses of any note in South Australia and extend over a distance of approximately 400km.

The Flinders, like the McDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory,  offer rugged, spectacular scenery that is at its best in the changing light of daybreak and sunset when the colours come alive.

This is an area known for its outback bushwalking trails and the wildlife drawn to its waterholes. After the winter rains the area is covered in a blanket of spring wildflowers.

Rock paintings and engravings are common in the area in several Aboriginal heritage sites.

Flinders Ranges Holidays - Places of Interest

Wilpena Pound is considered to be the main attraction of the Flinders and is one of the most significant Aboriginal heritage areas. A large natural basin set behind rock cliffs, Wilpena Pound is up to 500 metres high, covers approximately 80 sq km. and lies within the Flinders Ranges National Park.

This natural habitat is renowned for its bird populations and wildlife . Popular spots for visitors are the Sacred Canyon rock engravings and the scenic attractions at Brachina Gorge, Aroona Valley and Bunyeroo Creek. There are several bushwalks of varying degrees of difficulty throughout the park.

Quorn is just 40km from Port Augusta and sits at the southern end of the range. The town is a staging point for 4WD and adventure tours of the region. There is rock climbing at Warren Gorge and the vintage Pichi Pichi Railway through the nearby pass of the same name.

Hawker is a small township and the access point to nearby Wilpena Pound (see above). There are Aboriginal rock paintings at nearby Yourambulla Rock Shelter.

Blinman serves as the jumping off point for some spectacular local locations such as The Aboriginal rock carvings at Mt Chambers Gorge, the ironstone ridges of the Great Wall of China and Parachilna Gorge.

Leigh Creek is an open cut mine and mine tours are available. It's South Australia's only coal mine and supplies coal to Port Augusta.

Arkaroola Village sits at the northern end of the Flinders, a region considered by many to be the best part of the ranges. There is rugged mountain country and examples of Australia's red centre. 4WD adventure tours are popular.
