This is the area enclosed by the border with Victoria, the Murray River as it makes its its way to the coast at Lake Alexandrina, and the Western Highway where it crosses the border to the south. It's a region of vineyards, riverside country clubs, citrus plantations, houseboats and water sports. Visitors can absorb the history of the region in the small river townships and paddlewheel steamers on the Murray River. A feature of the region are the unique lagoons and the pelican population at the Coorong National Park. The small towns inland from the river are home to agricultural communities. A popular pastime is fishing for both the fresh water and salt water enthusiast.

Barmera adjoins a popular water sports spot at Lake Bonney and has a National Trust listed hotel. Waikerie has large birdlife populations on the river and surrounding lagoons. Once a busy river port, Morgan now provides a car ferry across the river. Swan Reach is located near Big Bend where there is a lookout over the high riverside cliffs. Mannum has many historical relics of the early pioneer days and the Cascade Waterfalls and Purnong Bird Sanctuary are nearby. Murray Bridge is a centre for river cruises and a popular day trip destination from Adelaide. It is the largest of the river towns, the site of the first bridge over the Murray River and is a popular spot for fishing and watersports. The last township on the river is nearby Tailem Bend which has a historical village recreation in the Old Tailem Town. Coorong National Park takes the form of a narrow 140 km long coastal strip south from Lake Alexandrina which is the mouth of the Murray. The park consists of a series of shallow lagoons and salt pans buffered from the ocean by sand dunes. It is a haven for water birds and has a large pelican population.
