South West Tasmania Holidays

This region of Tasmania is one of the great untouched wilderness areas of the world. It's a very isolated area and visitors need to book with the various escorted wilderness adventure tour operators.

It is a place of pounding oceans along the coast, virgin rainforests and wild, white water rivers charging through steep gorges and ravines. The adventure tour operators in the area offer flying, hiking, mountaineering, white water rafting, canoeing and caving.  Many tours in the area will involve a "fly in - fly out" arrangement.

South West Tasmania - Places of Interest

Strathgordon is the major town in the region. It was originally built to house employees of the hydro-electric authority at the Gordon Dam and power station. The town is a popular spot for bushwalking, trout fishing and boating.

Lake Gordon and Lake Pedder are nearby and provide the water supply for the underground Gordon power station.

The National Parks are what this region is all about. The South West National Park is a vast remote wilderness of mountainous forests, buttongrass plains and a rugged coastline.

The Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park lies further north and is a wilderness area famous for white water rafting. There is vehicle access to some of the short walks. Access to the Gordon River is via Strahan at the entrance to Macquarie Harbour on the west coast.
