Wilsons Promontory is one of
Australia's first national parks and offers walkers over 80km of tracks. The
Mt Oberon and Squeaky Beach walks are amongst the most popular.
Moe
is coal mining town with several historical displays such as the
Old Gippsland Pioneer Township which has many old buildings and working
displays of old crafts. Pay a visit to the Gippsland Heritage Centre
for an insight into the area's history. Visit the restored gold mining town
of Walhalla on the goldfields railway .
Morwell is an industrial town with mine tours available as
part of the town's promotion of industrial tourism. The town services the
local power station, coal mines and pulp and paper industries.
Traralgon is a major paper and pulp centre and the focal
point of Victoria's energy industry. The town was originally a gold miners
rest stop and remnants of the gold rush architecture are still visible in
the town. One of Australia's biggest engineering ventures is the Loy Yang
power station to the south of the town.
Ninety Mile Beach is all about coastal dunes and pristine
white sands that stretch from Port Albert in the west to Lakes Entrance in
the east. The beach is best appreciated by following the
Ninety Mile Beach Wildlife Trail from Sale through Loch Sport
then back to the coastline through Golden Beach
and Seaspray. After a short detour inland, its back
through the fishing villages at McLoughlans Beach, Manns Beach and the charming Port Albert.
Visit Nooramunga Marine Park to see
the local marine life.
Sale is situated on the junction of the Princes Highway and
the Gippsland Highway and is the major town of the
Gippsland region. This is an ideal jumping off point for the Ninety Mile Beach
to the south. Bird enthusiasts will find the Sale Wetlands to be a popular location.
North
of Sale is the timber town of Heyfield, one of the
southern gateways to the alpine high country and part of the Country Road Scenic Drive
network. The nearby town of Stratford is on the Pioneer Way Heritage
Trail, being the first permanent
settlement in Gippsland.
Bairnsdale is a sensible location for those wanting to
combine coast and country. It is the largest town of the lakes area. It lies
at the junction of the Princes Highway as it passes along the coast and the
Omeo Highway that turns inland towards the high country.
Lakes Entrance is a place of warm winters and mild summers,
making it a very popular holiday destination. There is fishing in the lakes, rivers and ocean
with hire
boats, catamarans, canoes, windsurfers and jet skis plus every imaginable form
of water activity. Nearby Metung and
Paynesville are villages in the heart of the
Gippsland Lakes that offer peaceful relaxation and are ideal centres for
boating holidays.
Buchan is a gateway to the
Snowy River
National Park and the Alpine National Park. This is a area of 4WD tours, abseiling, white
water rafting, caving and cave tours. Anglers can try trout fishing in the
Buchan and Timbarra Rivers.
Orbost is 10 minutes on from the eastern end of the 90 Mile
Beach. It is also a gateway to the alpine high country of the inland.
There is an impressive coastline at Cape Conran Reserve and Pt Ricardo beach
offers surf fishing off the beach and great sunsets. Explore the nearby Bemm River and Point Hicks
and visit Grandview Lookout.
Mallacoota Inlet overlooks the Gabo Island
lighthouse and has year round bushwalking, inlet and ocean
fishing and walks on the
Wilderness Coast. Full day and twilight river cruises are available.
Enjoy some fishing and the
wildlife at Gypsy Point and pay a visit to the Genoa Falls.
