Western
Australia Kimberleys
Holidays - Places of
Interest
Broome
is
a remote town with a long history in pearling which is now a popular holiday destination.
The nearby
pristine Cable Beach is a local favourite. Visit the dinosaur footprints and
coloured rock formations at Gantheaume Point, the Broome Crocodile Park and
the Willie Creek Pearl Farm.
Try a sunset camel ride, bird watching at Roebuck Bay
or some
shopping at Chinatown. The tropical waters around
Broome
provide some excellent fishing. Cape Leveque at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula
is a site for beautiful sunsets.
Derby
is a gateway for exploring the gorges of the
Kimberleys and taking a flight over King Sound and the Buccaneer Archipelago.
Derby was once
a thriving port town where cattle from the huge cattle stations of the
region were shipped to market. The administrative centre at Wharfinger's
House has some local history on display. The town features a huge boab known
as the Prison Tree.
Mt
Barnett - Gibb River Road
is a route of approximately 700km between Derby and Kununurra/Wyndham
which provides access
to popular Kimberley gorges sites. Something of a iconic trip for adventure
travellers, this unsealed road is recommended only for 4WD vehicles.
Although driving conditions have improved greatly in recent years, the route
is not recommended for casual traveller
without local knowledge and understanding of local conditions. It's quite
common for the road to be closed in the Wet Season.
The first 300km of the
Gibb River Road to Mt Barnett provides access to Lennard River Gorge, Adcock
Gorge and Galvan's Gorge. The next 400km to
Kununurra connects visitors with the Barnett River Gorge, Mitchell Falls, Cockburn
Ranges, Chamberlain Gorge and Emma Gorge.
Fitzroy Crossing
is the destination for reaching the wildlife
haven of Geikie Gorge on the Fitzroy River, set in a small
National Park. The Napier Ranges are a popular location to see the 90m high
Windjana Gorge on the Lennard River.
Halls Creek is a tiny
cattle town that had a short lived gold rush history. The
Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater, best viewed from the air, lies to
the south.
Wyndham
was
once the largest cattle town of the region but that role has now passed to Kununurra
which is now become the
major town in the area. The Five Rivers Lookout at Mt Bastion is a popular
spot for views of the area.
Kununurra owes its prosperity and good
fortune to the Ord River
Irrigation Scheme. Visitors can cruise the Ord River and Lake Agyle and tours
of the
Argyle Diamond Mine start from
Kununurra. The town
is the centre of a brisk tour industry with a lot of activity focused on the
Bungle Bungle rounded dome rock formations in nearby
Purnululu National Park. The Bungle Bungles are best seen from the air.
