Western Australia Mid West Tours & Holidays

This vast, sparsely populated region of Western Australia extends south from the Murchison River to the Midlands north of Perth, east to Lake Barlee and then across the Gibson Desert to the borders with the Northern Territory and South Australia.

There is a lot of similarity with the Pilbara region to the north, as this is also a region with a harsh, desert centre and some isolated development along the coastline.

Regional maps show roads through the central desert regions with names such as "Gunbarrel Hwy". These are definitely not highways and should only be attempted in 4WD vehicles by drivers equipped to handle isolated desert conditions.

Places To Go & Things To See In The Mid West

Geraldton enjoys a fine climate, plenty of wind and is known for its seafood. Geraldton is the only town of any size in the entire region and has a Maritime Museum with the history of the many ship wrecks that dot the coastline.

The reefs around Geraldton are the focus of the local crayfish industry. For some local history, visit nearby Greenough and the restored historical hamlet. Try a visit to the very different St Francis Xavier Cathedral and keen divers will want to tour the offshore Houtman Abrolhos Islands for diving tours.

Mount Magnet is a gold mining centre on the Great Northern Highway. Pay a visit to the nearby ruins of Lennonville and the Aboriginal art at Walga Rock.

Meekatharra is the junction of several of the region's off-highway roads. This is a gold mining town which used to be a railhead for cattle brought along the Canning Stock Route.
