Shark Bay is the location of the first recorded landing by a European explorer in Australia. It is a World Heritage and Marine Park best known for the wild dolphin visits at Monkey Mia in the Shark Bay Marine Park. The area has excellent beaches. A popular attraction is the unusual stromatolites at Hamelin Pool. Carnarvon is best known for its excellent climate, seafood, tropical fruit and some great beaches. A short way north from Carnarvon is the blowholes, the wreck of the Korean Star and the salt loading centre at Cape Cuvier. This is the spot where during winter whales and sharks herd shoals of small fish against the cliffs and indulge in a feeding frenzy which can last for days. North West Cape is a magnificent marine wonderland. The best known attraction is the enclosed lagoons of the Ningaloo Marine Park and Ningaloo Reef. Coral Bay is the entry point for the reef area which is a habitat for dugongs, whale sharks, manta rays, turtle rookeries and migrating humpbacks. Visitors can snorkel the clear waters, reef cruises are available and the adventurous can swim with whale sharks in season. Exmouth lies at the end of the road leading to North West Cape. Visit the Cape Range National Park on the west coast for some excellent beaches and some rugged scenery. The town was originally the site of a US navy base which is now closed.
